Equans and Sheffield City Council partner on modernisation programme for Sheffield homes
Equans has been appointed by Sheffield City Council to deliver a refurbishment programme across nearly 100 council-owned homes in Sheffield, reinforcing structural integrity, improving energy performance and enhancing living standards for residents.
Working in communities including High Green, Grenoside, Wharncliffe Side, Beighton, Hackenthorpe and Halfway, Equans will upgrade 96 properties, predominantly three-bedroom semi-detached post-war houses originally constructed using precast concrete columns and panels. These homes were only initially designed for a 20-year lifespan; the programme will extend their viability for decades.
The scope of works includes new roofs, windows and doors, alongside the installation of an insulated brick-effect outer wall to improve thermal performance and reduce heat loss. As a result, properties are expected to move from an EPC rating of D to at least C, helping residents to lower energy bills and live more sustainably.
Sean Corcoran, Regional Director at Equans UK & Ireland, said: “Whilst there is a lot of focus on building new, energy-efficient homes, it’s equally important to ensure our existing homes are fit for the future and suitable for today’s population.
“These homes have massively outlasted their expected lifespan and will now be brought up to 21st Century standards to provide safe and warm homes for many more years to come.”
This initiative aligns with Equans’ commitment to supporting local authorities in delivering sustainable, resilient and affordable housing, and demonstrates our expertise in regeneration and energy-efficiency solutions across the UK.
