Hydrogen is a highly combustible but zero carbon molecule, which makes it a suitable fuel to replace natural gas and petroleum as the world decarbonises. It will play a significant role in delivering net zero as it complements electrification as a decarbonisation tool for hard-to-abate sectors such as high-temperature heat for industrial processes, or for heavy duty or long-distance transport applications like buses, HGVs and aviation.

How will renewable hydrogen be produced and where will it be used?
Currently, almost all hydrogen produced globally is derived from fossil fuels without carbon capture making it a highly polluting industry - however new methods of producing hydrogen without this detrimental environmental impact are maturing.
CCUS-enabled (‘blue’) hydrogen is created by capturing the carbon that is generated when splitting fossil fuels. If a high enough level of carbon is captured, it is deemed renewable. Electrolytic (‘green’) hydrogen involves separating water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen using a technology called an electrolyser. If renewable electricity is used to power it, then it is zero carbon.
The UK Government has set a 2030 target of 10GW low carbon hydrogen production capacity and it estimates that 20-35% of final energy demand could come from hydrogen by 2050.

Hydrogen can replace natural gas in industrial processes. Electrolytic hydrogen can replace the grey hydrogen currently used in the petrochemical sectors.
Hydrogen can support electrification by providing inter-seasonal energy storage and dispatchable power.
Hydrogen or e-fuels can decarbonise heavy duty surface transport applications such as buses, HGVs, as well as maritime and aviation.
Some residential and commercial properties may be heated using hydrogen in the future.
