How will renewable hydrogen be produced and where will it be used?
Currently, almost all hydrogen produced globally is derived from fossil fuels without carbon capture making it a highly polluting industry - however new methods of producing hydrogen without this detrimental environmental impact are maturing.
CCUS-enabled (‘blue’) hydrogen is created by capturing the carbon that is generated when splitting fossil fuels. If a high enough level of carbon is captured, it is deemed renewable. Electrolytic (‘green’) hydrogen involves separating water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen using a technology called an electrolyser. If renewable electricity is used to power it, then it is zero carbon.
The UK Government has set a 2030 target of 10GW low carbon hydrogen production capacity and it estimates that 20-35% of final energy demand could come from hydrogen by 2050.

Hydrogen can replace natural gas in industrial processes. Electrolytic hydrogen can replace the grey hydrogen currently used in the petrochemical sectors.
