Overview
Working on behalf of Cheshire East Council and Everybody Health & Leisure, Equans has transformed the outdated swimming provision at Macclesfield Leisure Centre to ensure it remains a much-loved community facility for decades to come.
Originally opened in 1972, Macclesfield Leisure Centre has long been a popular destination for families and local residents, featuring a 25-metre, eight-lane swimming pool alongside a dedicated learner pool. After years of use, the swimming facilities required investment to address aging infrastructure, improve efficiency and reduce water and energy consumption.
Through a carefully planned programme of eco-upgrades and refurbishment works, Equans improved the performance, safety and sustainability of the pools while refreshing the overall look and feel of the facility.
Our work
Eco-upgrades to improve efficiency
Equans delivered an extensive eco-upgrade and refurbishment programme valued at almost £470,000, focused on improving operational efficiency and extending the lifespan of the pools.
A new Micro-Filtration system was installed to provide improved water quality while offering the potential to reduce water usage by up to 66%, helping to lower running costs for Cheshire East Council.
Safeguarding the pool for future use
While the pools were closed, Equans also carried out a range of essential repair and refurbishment works to improve the fabric of the facility and support the optimal performance of the new filtration system.
Underneath the pool, a new render coat was applied, and damaged pipework and valves were replaced to ensure a watertight environment for years to come. Lighting within the under croft area was upgraded to create a safer environment for employees requiring access to this space.
Concrete repairs were also completed, and all tiling associated with the pools and adjacent walkways was re-grouted, providing a refreshed appearance. To improve user safety, the aging steel steps were replaced with new block-built steps, offering a sturdier and more secure means of entering and exiting the pool.
Impact
The works delivered measurable improvements in water and energy efficiency while enhancing safety, water quality and the overall user experience.
The upgraded facilities now support reduced operational costs, improved sustainability and a safer environment for both customers and staff.
Outcomes
With the works complete, Macclesfield Leisure Centre can continue to provide valued health, fitness and social opportunities for the local community for many years to come.
The project was delivered seamlessly and completed on time, despite the inclusion of additional works, demonstrating Equans’ ability to deliver complex refurbishment projects efficiently and collaboratively.
Testimonials
“The project ran seamlessly, and with the inclusion of the additional works was still finished on time. The works will extend the life of the pools and their sustainability by reducing water and energy usage.”
