The largest tower block gas replacement in the UK.

The project originated from Gentoo’s need to modernise the gas-powered heating and hot water systems in 364 dwellings across seven high rise tower blocks in the north area of the City of Sunderland.

Route to decarbonisation

EQUANS engaged with Kensa, Sunamp and Switchee to produce a full turnkey proposal which was presented to Gentoo.

EQUANS managed all aspects of the award-winning project and worked in partnership with contractor Kensa Heat Pumps Contracting, to install the new low carbon, high efficiency and cost-effective Ground Source Heat Pump system.

EQUANS’ expertise in wide scale regeneration and energy projects ensured the project was delivered effectively, providing North Tower residents with a modern heating system and enhanced fire safety features.

Removal of gas was also proposed to align to Gentoo and Sunderland City Councils decarbonising heat strategy.

Result

The switch to the Zero Carbon system means that 2,600 tonnes of CO2 will be stopped from being emitted into the atmosphere over 20 years.
