Equans supports North Tyneside Council in delivering greener, warmer community spaces
Equans has successfully supported North Tyneside Council to deliver significant energy efficiency upgrades at two prominent community buildings, helping to futureproof vital public spaces while reducing carbon emissions.
Working in partnership with the Council, and part funded by the Salix Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, Equans has delivered the upgrades at the North Shields Customer First Centre and the White Swan Centre. The work forms part of the Council’s wider commitment towards net zero and ensuring its public buildings remain welcoming, sustainable hubs for local residents.
As part of the project, Equans replaced ageing boilers with modern air source heat pumps and upgraded heating systems. These improvements will provide warmer, more comfortable community facilities for visitors, powered by cleaner, greener technology, while significantly reducing energy consumption.
Together, the two sites are expected to save more than 260 tonnes of carbon each year - equivalent to the annual energy use of dozens of local households. The investment represents a key step in decarbonising the Council’s estate and protecting the long-term viability of centres that thousands of residents rely on for services, activities and social connection.
Councillor Sandra Graham, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and the Climate Emergency at North Tyneside Council, said:
“By working with partners and investing in greener technologies, we are making sure our public buildings remain warm, welcoming and sustainable, while reducing emissions and tackling the climate emergency. This is one of the ways we are working to make North Tyneside an even better place for everyone to live.”
Richard Carmichael, Managing Director at Equans UK & Ireland, said: “Reducing carbon emissions in public buildings is one of the most effective steps councils can take toward a greener future. Not only will the White Swan Centre and North Shields Customer First Centre now benefit from reduced energy use, but they will also provide a comfortable place for the public to visit for years to come and will help to secure a more sustainable future for North Tyneside’s public buildings.”
Equans continues to support North Tyneside Council on its decarbonisation journey and is currently designing a decarbonisation solution for the Council’s Quadrant East headquarters as part of the next phase of its energy efficiency programme.
