Equans to deliver energy efficiency upgrades for Newcastle’s community pools
Equans is set to begin a major decarbonisation project on behalf of Newcastle City Council, enhancing the energy efficiency of two well-loved community swimming pools in Jesmond and Elswick.
The upgrades will see Elswick Pool benefit from a new low-carbon heating system, solar panels, upgraded air handling units, and energy-efficient windows, significantly improving operational efficiency. Jesmond Pool will also receive solar panels and a new pool cover to reduce heat loss and generate on-site renewable energy.
Funded through the Sport England Swimming Pool Fund and the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, the project will reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption, making these vital community spaces more sustainable and fit for the future. Elswick Pool is additionally funded by the Green New Deal Fund as part of Newcastle City Council’s development programme.
Darren Sterling, Regional Managing Director at Equans UK & Ireland commented: "By carrying out these works on some of our communities’ most treasured leisure facilities, we are helping to safeguard them for future generations, improving their running costs and efficiency. We’re very pleased to support these venues and contribute to the city of Newcastle’s wider transformation to net zero."
These improvements will ensure the pools remain sustainable, resilient, and cost-effective, providing long-term benefits for the local community.
