Restoration works underway at Grade II listed Corporation Road Bridge, Grimsby
Equans are leading a £5m scheme to restore Grade II listed Corporation Road Bridge on behalf of North East Lincolnshire Council.
Equans’ Highways team in North East Lincolnshire will project manage the works which are expected to take 11 months to complete. Spencer Group, who has carried out maintenance and repair work on some of the UK’s most iconic bridges, including the Humber, Forth, Erskine, Severn and Menai bridges, have been confirmed as the successful contractor on this project.
Corporation Road Bridge is a relatively rare Scherzer rolling lift bascule bridge. It was built in 1928 to replace an existing swing span bridge to allow shipping traffic access to the former fishing dock from inland waters.
Although nowadays there is very little shipping traffic, undertaking the works will allow North East Lincolnshire council are able to demonstrate they maintain their heritage assets to the correct condition, and the bridge will be removed from the heritage at risk register.
With a detailed schedule in place, the refurbishment will incorporate key structural works as well as improvements to the aesthetics of the bridge.
Neil Foster, Equans Project Manager on the North East Lincolnshire contract, said: “We’re delighted to be working on the Corporation Road Bridge restoration works. The bridge is a key structure the borough and these works will help to protect this landmark for many years to come and preserve its Grade II listed heritage status.”
