Overview
The Leeds Generating Station Complex (GSC), a vital piece of shared infrastructure, required a major, multi-faceted upgrade to ensure the continued provision of essential services (heating, cooling, and power) for both the university and the hospital. The core objectives were:
- Enhance resilience and reliability: To future-proof the 40-year-old complex and guarantee continuity of critical services, especially for patient care and medical equipment.
- Improve efficiency and sustainability: To significantly reduce energy consumption and operational costs while aligning with the clients’ long-term commitments to netzero carbon targets.
Our work
Equans delivered a transformative infrastructure upgrade at the GSC, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance performance across the complex. The project scope included state-of-the-art replacements and upgrades to power generation, heating, cooling, and digital systems.
Key deliverables:
- Heating and power: Installation of 55MW boiler upgrades to enhance the reliability of hot water and heating services, alongside the introduction of new generators, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engines, and a high-voltage distribution board
- Cooling and water: Replacement of four 3.34MW chiller units to ensure a resilient cooling system, and water plant upgrades to improve resilience for the distribution of 200,000 litres of water daily.
- Digital integration: Comprehensive updates to digital monitoring systems, improving remote plant visibility and control for enhanced operational efficiency.
- Asset protection: Repairs to the 40-year-old roof to safeguard the long-term operations of the vital facilities inside the complex.
Impact
The project guarantees annual energy savings of £3 million, delivering significant long-term cost efficiencies for both the university and NHS Trust. By enhancing heating, cooling, and water distribution systems, it strengthens operational resilience, ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of critical patient care and educational services.
At the same time, the integration of efficient generation and distribution equipment supports both institutions in advancing toward their net-zero carbon goals. Importantly, all upgrades are implemented with minimal disruption, guaranteeing seamless service delivery and the continuation of patient care and academic activities
