Overview
Equans will install new kitchens and bathrooms in around 1,500 homes every year in the East of Birmingham over the next decade, as part of a £0.5bn partnership with Birmingham City Council.
Between 2024 and 2026 alone, Equans installed more than 7,000 bathrooms and 6,500 kitchens in Birmingham City Council (BCC) properties, under a partnership dating back to 2016. The improvements have enhanced living standards, with much of the work taking place alongside other major projects.
Our work
Rooms fully modernised
Homes in high and low-rise flats and pre-and-post-war houses and bungalows are fitted with modern, high quality kitchens and bathrooms - providing much improved, living spaces for tenants and instilling a renewed sense of pride in their homes.
Improvements to kitchens include new sinks, kitchen units and durable worktops, along with new hard-wearing flooring and stylish splashbacks.
Bathrooms are refitted with modern sinks, baths, electric showers and low-flush toilets. New flooring is laid and walls around baths and showers are protected with PVC finishings to protect walls and add a stylish touch.
Electrical upgrades, plastering and remedial repairs are carried out where needed. Each room is also redecorated, giving it a fresh new feel and look.
Safe and healthy homes
Where required, traditional bathrooms are converted into wet-rooms to improve accessibility and safety for residents.
Mechanical extraction fans have been installed in kitchens and bathrooms to aid ventilation - allowing clean, fresh air to flow.
This helps to minimise moisture and damp conditions which can lead to mould growth.
Quality care throughout
Equans’s high standard of workmanship and programme management is reflected by a consistent 95%+ customer satisfaction score across our kitchen and bathroom replacement workstreams.
Throughout the work - from design to aftercare - Equans’s tenant-focused customer care team is on hand to support residents and guide them through each stage of this often disruptive process.
Sensitive support is also given to help vulnerable residents clear unwanted items and clutter from their homes so that work can be undertaken safely.
Outcomes
Strategic, informed planning
By aligning kitchen and bathroom replacements with planned retrofit and major structural projects in the city, Equans helps BCC to efficiently maximise its work programmes and hit targets for making homes decent.
For example, kitchens and bathrooms have been replaced in several tower blocks whilst major structural work has been undertaken to the exterior of the blocks.
Equans’s capabilities and expertise in planning this work concurrently with retrofit and refurbishment projects delivers cost efficiencies for the council and offers a seamless service for residents and the council - minimising future disruption.
