Overview
This planned and responsive maintenance and capital works programme provides excellent services for residents - ensuring their homes run efficiently and that help is on hand in an emergency, whilst also helping to revitalise communities and boost employment.
True partnership from the start
In 2016, Equans was appointed by Birmingham City Council – the UK’s largest local authority landlord – to provide a repairs, maintenance and capital improvement service to 9,000 council homes in the North of the city. Following the partnership’s success, Equans was also awarded the East and West quadrants in 2022, becoming responsible for around 40,000 homes. The council awarded Equans a further two-year contract in 2024.
Providing a first class service
Equans works across Birmingham’s varied and often complex housing stock of traditional housing, post-war prefabs, low-rise flats and high-rise tower blocks. Since 2022, each year Equans has:
- Carried out c152,000 responsive repairs
- Completed c29,000 gas services
- Refurbished c2,000 empty homes
- Attended c137,000 call-outs
Equans boasts a 91% ‘first-time fix’ rate and is consistently rated highly against all KPIs set by Birmingham Council. Customer satisfaction scores consistently average 99% on a monthly basis.
Our work
Transforming the city
As well as day-to-day responsive maintenance, Equans undertakes a range of complex and large-scale planned projects including building refurbishment, major structural work, and internal improvements and adaptations. In 2024 alone, over 2,000 homes across Birmingham benefitted from new kitchens and bathrooms installed by Equans, whilst a capital works programme has resulted in scores of the city’s tower blocks being modernised, strengthened and made safer.
Equans also worked in partnership with the council to secure £24million from Wave 2.1 of the Government’s Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund (previously the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund) – the largest allocation awarded to a single council at the time – unlocking an £111m decarbonisation programme across the city to retrofit 2,000 homes.
Impact
Leaving a legacy in the city
In 2024 alone, Equans generated over £11m of social value for Birmingham communities.
In this time, Equans staff have also spent over 500 hours volunteering to help improve and enhance communities and lives. Equans directly employs over 500 people in Birmingham including 40 apprentices - ensuring skills and knowledge are safeguarded in the city for future generations
