Overview
Equans is supporting M Group Energy on the Kintore–Hurlie 400kV overhead line connection, a strategic upgrade by SSEN Transmission to strengthen Scotland’s electricity network. Our role is to provide early-stage noise monitoring across key receptor locations to ensure environmental compliance from the outset.
Our work
SSEN’s 400kV upgrade is vital for Scotland’s net-zero journey. But with activity spanning approximately 30km and involving sensitive local receptors, understanding the impact of construction-related noise is critical for maintaining site continuity. As work began, M Group Energy needed to establish baseline noise levels and demonstrate compliance with relevant environmental standards. Equans was brought in early to ensure a robust compliance framework was in place from the beginning, before any issues arose.
We conducted baseline noise and vibration assessments along an approximately 30km overhead line route. Each location was carefully selected to reflect potential sensitivities, with 10–30 minutes of real-time data collected per site. This approach ensured clear documentation of pre-construction conditions and enabled faster response as construction progresses. By working on-site with M Group Energy and adapting to local environmental conditions (including phenomena like conductor galloping), we are ensuring compliance is built into the project from day one.
Impact
We are helping lay the groundwork for a high-profile transmission upgrade, supporting environmental credibility, reducing the risk of delays, and aligning with local planning expectations. By embedding early and responding in real time to sitespecific conditions, we are helping M Group Energy and SSEN Transmission navigate complex environmental obligations without disruption. The result is a well-documented, compliant foundation that supports faster delivery, safeguards project timelines, and strengthens stakeholder trust, ensuring this nationally significant upgrade moves forward with both technical precision and public confidence.
