Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
Achieve gross carbon emission reductions over the near termWhat is SBTi?
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body set up to enable businesses to set ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. It is a joint initiative developed by CDP, UN Global Compact, WWF and WRI.
It provides businesses with a clear, science-backed process for achieving gross carbon emission reductions over a five to ten-year period. SBTi uses proven climate science to help businesses define how much they need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, and how quickly, in order to meet the ambition of keeping global temperature increases within 1.5°C.
Who is it for?
Companies in all sectors, except the oil & gas and public sectors.
What emissions does SBTi cover?
Participants need to set reduction targets for Scope 1 (direct emissions from fuel consumption and vehicle fleets) and Scope 2 emissions (energy-related indirect emissions, including emissions from purchased electricity, heating and cooling). They will also need to set targets for Scope 3 (indirect) emissions from their supply chains, if those emissions account for 40% or more of total emissions.
What is the SBTi process?
- Commit - submit a letter establishing your intent to set a science-based target.
- Develop - collect data and calculate emissions so that reduction targets can be set in line with SBTi criteria.
- Submit - present your target to SBTi for official validation.
- Communicate - inform stakeholders and officially announce the target.
- Disclose - report company-wide emissions and progress towards your target annually.
What targets must be set under the SBTi scheme?
Participants must set a near-term target for gross carbon emission reductions over five to ten years. The SBTi standard recognises that rapid, deep cuts to emissions are the most effective and scientifically proven way to limit global temperature rises. This is the central focus of the SBTi standard. The scheme also recognises that Scope 3 emissions often represent the largest proportion of an organisation’s greenhouse gas emissions. Setting targets for Scope 3 reductions is vital in achieving global net-zero targets.
How is the scheme monitored and validated?
SBTi participants need to report on their progress annually. Progress against targets is externally assessed and validated, either by the SBTi or an accredited consultancy.
The SBTi partners are developing an advanced standard for measurement and verification.
The benefits of SBTi participation

- Improves investor confidence by demonstrating serious commitment to carbon reduction.
- Drives innovation and competitive advantage.
- Boosts profitability through improved operational efficiencies and cost savings.
- Strengthens reputation for sustainability and environmental commitment.
- Supports full regulatory compliance.
