Overview
Equans carried out significant improvement work to 215 homes at The Lanes in Rotherham on behalf of Rotherham Council. This programme has delivered a 30% reduction in resident fuel bills and helped cut carbon emissions across the estate.
Our work
A £4.2 million investment, including £1 million from the Government’s Green Home Scheme, enabled Rotherham Council to partner with Equans to retrofit homes at The Lanes, East Dene. Completed in just six months, the works included:
- Installing new triple glazing
- Replacing old boilers
- Insulating external doors
- Re‑sealing and insulating all flat roofs
- Topping up pitched roof and cavity wall insulation, where required
Beyond residents’ homes, Equans also supported the wider community by installing a new boiler at The Lanes Community Centre, with staff also carrying out redecorating works as part of our social value commitment.
Impact & Outcomes
The retrofit programme has delivered substantial improvements for residents, both financially and environmentally. On average, households are now expected to save £323 per year, reducing fuel bills by more than 30%, alongside achieving an estimated 1.5‑tonne reduction in CO₂ emissions per home each year.
These measures addressed long‑standing energy inefficiencies across the estate. Properties at The Lanes - built in the 1950s and 60s, many without any form of roof insulation- had become increasingly difficult and expensive to heat, falling far short of modern standards for energy performance, affordability, and comfort.
Before the works began, almost all homes held an EPC rating of D or below, with 98 properties rated E or F. Following completion of the retrofit programme, of the 175 homes reassessed to date, 73% now achieve an EPC rating of B or C.
Overall, the project demonstrates how targeted investment and efficient delivery can rapidly and meaningfully improve the energy performance of older housing stock - lowering household costs, enhancing comfort, and reducing carbon emissions for the long term.
